Good evening. This evening I have a request for you, and I assure you, it’s most sincere. There’s a problem in our galaxy, nay, in our universe that’s got to be fixed. And it’s helping no one at all. So this, as much as any other post I have ever done, is a public service announcement. For the love of all that is holy, pure, and good … please, please, please stop mining latinum with Envoys and Horizons. (Also not with a Vahklas or a Botany Bay, but that should go without saying.)
It’s not good for you, and it’s not good for anyone else on your server.
And no, I’m not talking about using a North Star to hold your node while you unload your D’Vor. No problem with that at all.

Why It’s Not Good for You
I know what you’re thinking. You may be one of those people who doesn’t have a D’Vor (ie, Piggy). You didn’t want to shell out the twenty smackers for a piggy. I’ve earned a second one through completing 30-day loyalty and armada chests, as well as spending Borg credits in the last event – but you could be a newer player, and you haven’t done. that. I totally respect that. And you still want to refine latinum. I respect that too.
But sending your Envoy out is a tremendously inefficient way of doing that.
To demonstrate, I’ve put together this chart for you. I took four ships, without Ten of Ten, and how quickly they were mining latinum in Beta Penthe, not the highest, but one of the higher rate mining systems. For me to do one raw latinum refinement, it’s 90,000. It may be less for you. The sample Envoy would take about a month, mining 24 hours a day to clear 90k latinum. Both the Horizon and the North Star will take more than a week. I know that these rates may vary based on ship level – but the point remains the same.
Ship | Hourly Rate | Days to Mine 90k |
Envoy | 132 | 28.41 |
Horizon | 442 | 8.48 |
North Star | 483 | 7.76 |
D’Vor | 6321 | 0.59 |
You’ve only got a limited number of hours in the day, and many other tasks to accomplish – and you’re wasting your time by leaving one of your ships on a latinum node.
Why It’s Not Good For Me (And You, When You Become Me)
I’m a raw latinum hunter. I admit it. If I’m not raiding a base, I’m looking for overprotected latinum miners. And it takes a great deal of time for me to scan Envoys. I still find overprotected Envoys from time to time.
And yes, I am working on a guide to help you win the Ferengi Monday event. (It’s going to be free exclusive for the people who sign up for my email list. You can sign up at the bottom of this post.)
How To Get Latinum Without a D’Vor
As you may have figured out from the last section, you hunt it. Get out there and hunt the stuff. Most of you probably have a ship that’s big enough to take down a large number of the piggies out there. The strongest ones I’ve seen are in the 160k range. You can hit them.
Find ones that are over the limit, and take them down. Now, you’re not going to find ones like this very often. This one’s my best, and I’m not sure I’ve seen any bigger. But this took me six minutes round trip.
Or would you rather try to get this much lat from your Envoy by mining from now until August.
It’s up to you.
PS… My pal Draugik asked me to remind you to stop mining data with Horizons. More on that later.
Stay safe out there.
Live Long and Prosper,
Carnac.
