The Vahklas is a bridge ship. It’s got enough power to replace your Jellyfish and should hold you over if you’re a Federation player until you get your Mayflower. It’s going to be less effective at level 30 when you can build a Romulan Centurion, or 32 when you can launch a Klingon B’Rel.
What The Vahklas Good At
The Ship Ability of “Pinpoint targeting” increases the accuracy against interceptors. This starts at 10% and maxes out at 60% by tier 9.
It’s pretty good at grinding hostiles and should help you complete a number of missions. It’ll also do you a world of good as a survey ship raider. At level 22, you’re going to want to start building up your reserves of raw resources and materials – as the costs of everything will start going up. It has a fairly good cargo capacity and will be able to take down most Envoys and D’Vors.
It’s got three energy weapons that fire every round, so you won’t be waiting for reloads.
Being an explorer, you can use it to take on lower level swarms, if you don’t yet have a Franklin.
What It’s Not So Good At
The rebalancing of the game last November didn’t do the Vahklas any favors at all. All the level 26 Faction ships got a huge bump in power, and the independent ships… didn’t. The increased strength of defense platforms hurts the Vahklas as a base cracker – which previously I used it for (when my North Star wasn’t available.)
How To Build a Vahklas
You’ll need a level 22 shipyard, and the Unlock Vahklas research to build a Vahklas. You can get extra blueprints by defeating level 28 ships. It takes 50 blueprints if you want to build another one, not that I’d recommend doing so.
And there will come a time in the game when you’ll get a Vahklas blueprint and dread it.
As of this writing, I have enough Vahklas blueprints to construct another 86 of them. Not that I ever would, but they’re there. These things drop like rain eventually, and they’re completely useless to players above level 26.
Should You Scrap It?
Once you’ve got a faction explorer, yes, send it to the scrap heap. There was one Live Target Practice event that involved the Vahklas, and if you’ve scrapped yours, you’re going to struggle. But you’ll still be able to complete the event. And the Uncommon ore and gas you’ll get from scrapping the ship are far more valuable anyway. Recycling this will give you a big boost towards tiering up your faction explorer.
It doesn’t make sense to build and upgrade new ones just for the purpose of scrapping them, as it does with some of the earlier ships, as it takes 3* materials.
Background
The Vahklas debuted in the Star Trek: Enterprise episode “Fusion” as a craft run by civilian Vulcans. Apparently they didn’t take such good care of it, as Commander Tucker spent the better part of the episode fixing it.
The model later showed up in a number of episodes as a Vulcan High Command ship.
