One of the officers who I’d long been hoping to get was Five of Ten, or “Borg Jaylah.” But I came up a bit short during the Borg arc of acquiring enough shards in any of the events. It wasn’t until last month that I finally got enough shards, and even though I’ve only got her at level five, she’s one of the officers I use on a regular basis.

And while she’s comparable to Pike, she’s more versatile than he is. She’ll be one of your go-to officers in Armadas, Stellamadas, and Borg probe hunting. She’s even useful in PvP.

Captain’s Maneuver

Jaylah Borgified: Five of Ten increases the Shield deflection, Armor and Dodge by a Percentage of the Total Health of all Officers on the ship. Base value: 200%. Maximum value: 1000%

Any time you see the number 1000% in Star Trek Fleet Command, it should start to get you a little bit excited. And anytime you see a captain’s maneuver that increases three stats, it’s even better. That she increases shield deflection, armor, and dodge means that she’ll be an effective captain on any ship you want to put her on.

Your lower decks crew will make a big difference here. You’ll want to load them up below decks with as much health as you can.

This effect works an awful lot like Pike’s ability against hostiles, but against all opponents. It’s not quite as dramatic, but it’s still a great crew.

The Pike crew will reduce the overall damage. Jaylah doesn’t affect damage, but rather, the mitigation of that damage. In a nutshell, each time your ship is hit, you get a certain amount of damage. Pike reduces that number. The damage is then applied to your ship in three ways, it’s either mitigated, goes to your shields, or goes to your hull.

This is where Five of Ten helps you. Her captain’s maneuver will greatly mitigate the damage your ship will receive, and less will go to your shields and hull.

Officer Ability

Five of Ten increases the Loot received from Hostiles by a percentage rank 1 Value: 20% Rank 5 Value: 100%

So as Pike gives you a bonus to your ship’s experience every time you hit a hostile, Five of Ten gives you a loot bonus. And this is compounded by any ship bonuses you’ll get, like on the Stella with Eclipse Security Codes.

This will give you a bonus with loot from hostiles, and it will also give you a the credits gained from all sorts of armadas.

For Collecting Borg Nanoprobes? Better than Pike?

Well, here’s the answer. Yes, or no. Maybe. The real answer is, it depends on the levels of your officers. If you’ve got a killer fully promoted Pike Moreau and Chen, then in my experience, they’re better for collecting borg nanoprobes than your 5 of 10 crew if she’s only level one. But that’s with her only giving you a 20% bonus in collected loot. But at higher levels, that’s going to tip the scales.

I did a run with my tier 8 Vi’Dar, and headed for the level 33 borg probes in Corta Gamma. As of right now, my maxed Pike Crew is still more effective than either configuration of Borg Jaylah/Five of Ten crews. However, I’m almost certain this will change once I promote Jaylah and the other Borg officers a couple of times.

Crew Inter Nanoprobes
Pike Crew         107,000
Five Seven Eight           74,000
Five Seven Nine           75,000

On Armadas

Borg Jaylah is going to quickly get into your rotation for both Stellamadas and regular armadas. Combining her with Six of Ten’s armada ability, and her loot bonus is going to make a big difference. She’ll give you the double bonus of reducing the damage that you’ll take and keep you in the fight longer, and you’ll get more armada credits.

Depending on your other officer levels, this crew will get into your armadas rotation with Kirk, Spock, Khan, etc.

Mission Bosses? Does Borg Jaylah work for those?

Yes.

The loot bonus won’t do anything for you, but the damage mitigation will still help.

What About for Swarm?

As captain of a second or third swarm crew, Jaylah’s okay. But until you’ve really leveled up your Borg crew, she isn’t going to replace Pike Moreau T’Laan, or even your Cadet Uhura crew.

Sofia Boutella Trivia

As Jaylah herself is currently an unavailable officer, so I’m going to go ahead and cover the actress who portrayed Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond now.

You could probably win a contest if you knew that Jaylah was portrayed by French-Algerian actress Sofia Boutella.

Boutellea was born in Bab El Oued, Algiers, Algeria on April 3rd, 1982. In 1992, her family moved to France, and there she began to study dance and rhythmic gymnastics. She eventually joined the French national rhythmic gymnastics team.

Boutella’s father is musician Safy Boutella. Both Sofia and Safy attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.

Her performing career began as a dancer. First as a member of the dance group Vagabond Crew, Boutella won the Dance Battle of the Year in 2006. Later, she performed in the show group Chienne de Vie and Aphrodites during her time in France.

During this time, she was a backup dancer in music videos for artists like  Cesária Évora,  Jamiroquai,  Bodyrockers, Axwell. I’ll admit that I’ve heard of one of those acts.

In 2005, she became a principal dancer for Madonna, appearing in several music videos, going on several tours, and in the halftime show at the Super Bowl in 2012.

As an actress, she appeared in the French music film Le défi in 2002 (which you can watch for free on YouTube), an episode of Les Cordier, juge et flic , the television movie Permis d’aimer, and lent her voice to the animated feature Azur et Asmar in 2006.

In 2012, she played the lead character Eva in the dance drama StreetDance 2. Her breakthrough role cam in Kingsman: The Secret Service. She also appeared in the thriller Jet Trash and on the drama Tiger Raid.

She auditioned for Star Trek Beyond, she had no idea what character she’d be playing, or even what film she was up for.

“”It wasn’t until the callback that they told me it was Star Trek, and what character I was playing,” she recalled. “Then they took me to the make-up trailer and said, ‘This is what you’re going to look like.’ And I was like, ‘Holy shit.’” (Empire, issue 326, p. 76) Boutella, who had never done any prosthetics work before, elaborated, “At first, when I had the make-up put on me, I thought, ‘what remarkable work.’ I’ve never seen anything like it.” (Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016, p. 70.)
