Context is for Kings is back, and judging by my inbox, there is a huge misconception about the event.

Event Background

First off all, the event’s name comes from the third episode of Discovery’s season one, of the same name. If you’ll remember, that’s the first episode aboard the Discovery. The one where we first see the spore drive.

And the one where everyone on the Discovery’s sister ship is turned inside out.

Context is for Kings Events

There are three Context is for Kings events on right now.

There’s the Solo event, and the rewards for this are lackluster. The Tritanium is nice, but battleship parts are a bit of a letdown. (See photo above)

The Solo Leaderboard is a bit more rewarding.

There’s an Avatar and explorer parts, but

For the solo event, there are Discovery recruit tokens up for grabs.

These alliance rewards are not bad at all, for a little event, the 475 Independent credits are a really good reward.

Collecting Mycelium

Here’s where the misconceptions come in. You get points for collecting Mycelium in the event. But it doesn’t matter how you collect the Mycelium. You’ll get five points for Cultivated Mycelium, and one point for Raw Mycelium.

You can get Raw Mycelium by mining it. You can do so by destroying hostiles, and yes, you can do so by hitting overprotected ships. In fact, that’s the best way to get a lot of points in a hurry.

I’ve had a number of players take exception to overprotected hits over this, but it’s a part of the game, and it’s rewarded in the event.

As shown above, I got 2830 points for hitting an OP ship. Given that the max you can get from mining is 800, this proves it. But in case you’re a bit obstinate, here’s a video. The consolation is that, unlike the Latinum Rush event, you don’t lose points for losing Mycelium.

If you really need more proof, here it is in video form.

The Responses

The responses to this have gone from the disbelieving…

To the obscene…

To the downright nuts…

I’m probably going to write about this in more detail later, but if having an overprotected pretend ship blown up in a game causes you to send nasty messages to people, you should probably take a break from the game.

Maybe get some help.

What About the Cultivated Mycelium?

Here’s the rub. In order to cultivate Mycelium, you’ll need to get below your limit (around 18K) in the Discovery Refinery. You’ll probably need to do a bunch of Black Alert jumps with your Discovery to get this done.

Once done, you’ll be able to cultivate it. From refining two chests of Mycelium, I was able to get 30,000 points. And you’ll be able to do this once every 22 hours.

Much to my chagrin, you can also get points for purchasing the Mycelium Pack in the store. It’s not a bad deal, but if you see someone you’re competing with jumps up 400,000 points in an instant, now you know why. Nothing against anyone who spends anything on the game – you’re the ones who keep the game going.

Again, I don’t think the pack itself is a terrible deal. I just don’t like the ability to basically buy event points.

However, if you put a little bit of effort into it, you should still be able to overcome this by harvesting overprotected Discoveries.

It’s what I’ve done.

LLAP my friends.
