So, with the announcement of the agreement between CBS and Scopely, we know we’re going to be getting new content from the various Star Trek TV series.

“In a small way, it already has. Witness Harry Mudd from  Discovery last week! Next up, the development team introduces new content and characters. And then it will get bigger… with missions, technology, officers, ships, and more taken from the greater multiverse of Star Trek. “

Scopely Announcement

So we know that new ships are coming. To that end, I’ve been thinking about the ship’s abilities that some of the new ships from those series could have in Star Trek Fleet Command. For this article, I’m going with the main, “hero ship” from each series. We don’t know for sure which ships are coming, but we can guess based on the announcement. And we have no idea which order they could be released in, or when at all.

But it does seem likely, so let’s have a little fun, and think of what these ships could be when they get here.

Now I realize that most (probably all) of these abilities won’t come to pass, and there will likely be changes in game dynamics that these ships will fit into. Think Franklin and destroying Swarm, Botany Bay mining data, or Stella getting increased rewards from Eclipse ships.

So here they are, in order of the chronological order of their series release.

Original Series Enterprise

Hours Could Seem Like Days

It seems like the one running theme of the original Enterprise, both in the Original Series and in the first three movies was that something was always wrong with the ship. It was kinda like my dad’s car, always threatening to break down, but always getting you where you needed to go.

So for an ability, how about the ability to repair itself in space. Perhaps the Prime Scotty could make the repair go even faster? Something along the lines of recovering a certain amount of hull health every hour?

USS Enterprise-D

Saucer Separation

How cool would this be? Imagine it. You’re in a system, and an opponent is coming after you, and you split your ship in two, sending half the ship to occupy your attacker while the rest of your ship escapes.

I’m not sure how this would work with the game code, and how you’d do it without adding another dock, but then again, I’m not a programmer, just an idea guy with a blog.

Quick bit of trivia – this feature of the Enterprise-D was originally slated for Kirk’s Enterprise on the original series.

Defiant

Tough Little Ship (Ablative Armor)

I thought about going with the cloaking device, but there’s already one on the B’Rel, and it’s not a real cloaking device. It’s not like it’s actually invisible. So, instead, we can go with the Defiant‘s Ablative Armor – which on Deep Space Nine meant that was designed to “that was designed to disintegrate under enemy fire at a controlled rate.”

So in the game, I would think this would mean that the Defiant would mitigate some large percentage of damage against energy weapons.

USS Voyager

Bio-Neural Circuitry

I would think Voyager’s ability would have something to do with deep space, or in STFC terms, Dark Space. Perhaps, the ability to see in Dark Space from outside the system, or maybe increased warp speed in deep space? Something along the lines of the Quantum Slipstream Drive?

You don’t think of Voyager as a tough ship, so whatever it’s ability is, I would think it would have to do with travel and warp speed (or range.)

Part of me still likes the idea of stranding players for a three-month arc on a completely different map with only the Voyager,

NX-01 Enterprise

The Warp Five Engine

This one is the toughest one for me. Hhow do you make a ship interesting to higher level players when game-wise… when timeline-wise, it should be on the level with the Turas? So I guess then you’d need to give it a special ability along the lines of the Franklin. Or perhaps some developmental storyline? I’m not sure about this one.

Something with exploration? Maybe a benefit against hostiles? I’m stumped.

If you’ve got something better, let me know in the comments below, or on Discord.

USS Discovery

Black Alert

This one seems to be the most obvious of any of them. I’ve seen a few people mention something along these lines in some Discord channels.

Imagine if you had a limited number of jumps. You’d need to mine spores, refine them into spore drives that you could use to jump anywhere in the galaxy you’ve already explored?

Despite being contrived, and making no sense in terms of physics, or Star Trek canon, it would be fun in the game.

You’d have to think that if this ship came into the game with the ability to go anywhere in an instant, that it would have to take a hit in combat power to balance things off, right?
