So the last few months have seen Harry Mudd, a few more augments, and a boatload of Borg officers added to the game. This got me thinking about officers we haven’t seen in the game. So I put together my “Star Trek Fleet Command Officer Wish List.”

We’ll take it as a given that Star Trek Fleet Command plays fast and loose with timelines and universes. We’ve had Borg show up, that didn’t originally appear until The Next Generation, and the same is true of the Ferengi. So I guess we could open it up to add Cardassians, Bajorans, Breen, or any number of other species and characters. But I’m going to go with characters we’ve seen on screen, and who I’d most be interested in seeing added. It would be nice to find a few more Romulans to add to the game, but I couldn’t seem to think of any. I tried to stay with ones who would fit within the approximate timeline, and whom a reasonably good story could be constructed. And then I threw in Boyce, because, well, why not. He’s more established than Barot anyway.

Did I miss any? Let me know in the comments below.

My Star Trek Fleet Command Officer Wish List – Klingons

The cast of Klingons that we have is pretty good. Chang, Gorkon, and Azetbur from Star Trek VI. We’ve got Krell from A Private Little War in TOS, and we’ve got Michael Ansara‘s great Kang (not this Kang.) As a side note, Ansara’s Kang and JG Hertzler‘s Martok have the best Klingon voices anywhere.

But then we’ve got a lot of brand new made-up Klingons who never appeared anywhere – which is a shame because there are a few more big names who would fit perfectly in the Star Trek Fleet Command Universe who aren’t there yet.

Kor and Koloth

The late great John Colicos was the “original Klingon,” starring as the first Klingon nemesis Kor to Kirk in Errand of Mercy in the Original Series. He was scheduled to return a few more times, but scheduling conflicts prevented him from coming back, and thus Kang and Koloth were “born.” Colicos then reprised the role twice more on Deep Space Nine, as an aging but still heroic Kor.

Koloth was played by William Campbell, who first appeared as the eccentric and powerful Squire of Gothos. Koloth was Kirk’s antagonist in The Trouble with Tribbles. With Colicos and Michael Ansara, he was back in Deep Space Nine.

Kruge and Maltz

Why Klaa got into the game, and Kruge didn’t is beyond me? Kruge vaporized a gunner, choked a big worm, had David Marcus killed, and led to the destruction of the Enterprise. Klaa chased Kirk and got dressed down like a toddler by Korrd in Star Trek V.

Christopher Lloyd’s Kruge helped set up what it meant to be Klingon since the beginning of the movie-era. Other than a brief appearance by Mark Lenard (more on him later) in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, his appearance in Star Trek III was the first appearance of the ridged, warrior race Klingons. Lloyd’s performance was an amazing departure from Jim Ignatowski on Taxi, and light-years away from Doc Brown. For those of us who grew up in the ’80s, Kruge was THE Klingon baddie.

John Larroquette’s Maltz as the “thoughtful Klingon” should also be in the game. Again, it’s funny to think that Dan Fielding from Night Court was a Klingon. Little did anyone know that there would be an even bigger Night Court-trek connection yet to come.

C’mon Scopely, add these two.

Maltz, Cho e chu!

Valkris

And then there’s the extremely interesting Valkris. Believe it or not, she was played by Cathie Shirriff, who was the original co-host (with one-armed push-up man Jack Palance) of Ripley’s Believe it or Not. Don’t feel bad if you don’t remember her there, she only lasted one episode.

Valkris only appeared onscreen briefly, but an awful lot was learned about her in that period of time. She was involved personally with Kruge, she was a pretty great spy who managed to steal the Genesis plans, and she was so devoted to both Kruge and the empire that she was willing to die to keep secrets. Seems like that should earn her a spot in the game.

“Well done Valkris, you will be remembered with honor.”

Sarek

Sarek, from Journey to Babel in TOS (Memory Alpha photo)

Father to Spock (and Sybok, remember Sybok) the extremely logical Vulcan first appeared in Journey to Babel. First portrayed by Mark Lenard in Journey to Babel, he’d be back for the Animated Series, several Star Trek films, and The Next Generation. It seems odd that T’Pring and Stonn are in the game, but Sarek is not.

It seems like he’d be an ideal candidate for an epic officer.

Saavik

Saavik entered Star Trek by coming onto the Enterprise as a command trainee in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and then serving on the ill-fated USS Grissom in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

She first quoted regulations to Kirk, before letting her hair down and helping the resurrected Spock with his Pon Farr.

Kirstie Alley loved Star Trek so much that she wore the ears home after filming. She then left Star Trek for Cheers, where Rebecca Howe started out emotionless and wound up a hilarious wreck. Nobody cried funnier than Kirstie Alley.

In fact, the more I’m reading through my last five officer candidates, the more I think that a Genesis arc crew would be pretty amazing. And by that I mean the trilogy of Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, and The Voyage Home – not the trio of Phil Collins, Michael Rutherford, and Tony Banks.

Curzon Dax

Odo as Curzon Dax in Deep Space Nine (Memory Alpha photo)

Though he never appeared in any TOS-era shows, we know he was around during this time, and he was well-respected by Kang, Koloth, and Kor. He represented the Federation at the Khitomer Accords. And more than that, he was clearly a nut with a talent for making “friends” and causing trouble. Seems like this would open a few rich storylines for the writers at Scopely.

(And yes, I went with the Odo embodiment of Curzon, because I didn’t the old guy dying on the table from Emissary would have been as fitting.)

And now for the Majel Barrett-Roddenberry duo…

Number One

Majel Barrett at Number One, in The Cage (Memory Alpha photo)

The first-ever first officer of the Enterprise, serving under Captain Pike in The Cage, and later in Discovery, there’s been a lot of detail added to this character over the past few years due to her portrayal by Rebecca Romijn. Adding her to STFC would give some more backstory.

Christine Chapel

Having lost to the network in getting his fiance cast as the first officer of the Enterprise, Gene Rodenberry snuck his wife Majel back onto the show as Nurse Christine Chapel, only this time with blond hair, and the network missed it.

She later became a doctor by the time of The Motion Picture and was serving at Starfleet Headquarters during Star Trek: The Voyage Home.

So that’s a yes to Number One and Christine Chapel, and no to M’Ress, Lwaxana Troi, and Computer Voice.

Janice Rand

A yeoman on the original Enterprise, Grace Lee Whitney‘s Janice Rand later made appearances in three Star Trek films and on Star Trek Voyager. In TOS she served mainly as Kirk’s assistant, but by Star Trek The Motion Picture, she had moved up to operating the transporter.

Okay, so two of the people she was transporting died. She did manage to beam McCoy aboard safely, so she got one.

By Star Trek VI, she had moved over to Sulu’s USS Excelsior, where she served on the bridge crew. She got an action figure, it’s time she got into the game.

Doctor Boyce

Dr. Philip Boyce star trek fleet command officer wish list

I’m admitting that this one is a stretch. Appearing only in the Cage, and in archive footage in the Menagerie, Dr. Phil Boyce was the original acerbic Star Trek doctor, paving the way for Leonard McCoy, Katherine Pulaski, and the great Robert Picardo’s EMH. I’m pretty sure that most people don’t remember Boyce, but if we’re going to have Pike, and Number One, can we go ahead and add Boyce too?

And one late addition…

krall idris elba balthazar edison star trek fleet command officer wish listKrall / Balthazar Edison

So I wrote all of this. And then when I was researching another article I realized that I’d left off a huge character. And I’m legitimately curious why he isn’t in the game right now. I’ll admit that I haven’t seen Star Trek: Beyond more than a couple of times. So that’s why I overlooked him. But looking back on it now, that was a mistake on my part.

We had a swarm storyline. We added a Jaylah officer that like two people have. Edison was the captain of the Franklin – a ship that’s in the game. We’ve got Nero, the villain from Star Trek (2009), and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Khan from Star Trek: Into Darkness. So where is Idris Elba’s Krall?

My only guess is that they’re holding him back for an update in the future. And that’s one that I’m looking forward to greatly.
